Finders Keepers

As we wait for the final episode of Kathy’s seal story, I thought I’d give you a quick update on one of our latest wins. We’ve been in the market, as it were, for a floormat recently but do to budget and location were unable to procure one.

We came into Anacortes (Cap Sante Marina) on a Friday and noticed our neighbor had a fancy floormat. It seems the people with floormats don’t really talk to people that don’t have floormats. Or rather, it could be that motorboat people don’t really talk to sailboat people. In any case, they quickly disappeared after we completed our docking, so we never met them.

When we woke the next morning, a small miracle occurred. Our neighbors were gone, but the floormat was still there. Excited, I yelled to Kathy. She and I went outside and pondered what to do. Could we just move it to our side of the boat? What if they came back? What would we say if they came back and the floormat was next to our boat? They knew we weren’t floormat people.

Kathy smiled and jumped down on the dock. She picked up the floormat. I gasped at her boldness before I began to protest – I’d be the one beaten up over the floormat. It wasn’t worth it. She waved off my concern and moved the floormat slightly closer to our boat. “We don’t want someone else taking it,” she said.

I went inside and positioned our mast camera on the floormat and waited.

Under the cover of darkness, we moved it a little closer to our boat each night. On the last day at Anacortes, I carefully looked around to make sure there were no witnesses and grabbed it. “Go! Go!” I yelled to Kathy.

So now we have a fancy floormat. I can’t wait to get back to a marina and stick my nose up at the non-floormat people.
